Here I am standing in the Apple Store at Fifth Avenue, New York – and I am having an amazing moment right now. Not only am I downloading another Sims 2 expansion pack to my computer but I am doing it on the Windows operating system off of the free wifi here at this store. I just might be falling deeper and deeper in love with the world of Apple….lol.
Anyways, I am speaking on the phone with one of my best friends in the whole world and we are focusing on the art of listening.
And we realized something, that we are sure lots of other people have already have figured out and we are sure we will continue to figure out. We literally hear what we want to hear in this life. Literally.
I have always tried my best to listen to people, because I dislike when people are not really listening to me, with focused attention. But when it comes to people who are close to me, I have always tried to push them away…always.
So when they would tell me loving things or how amazing they believe me to be or even how they are happy to be in my life — I would filter it all with the assumption that they did not know the “real” me and that when they found out who “that” person was, they would run for the hills. I had this imaginary evil person inside of me — believing that the “real me” was not worthy of love, not worthy of great things, not worthy of an extraordinary life. And when I think back upon all of the people who have been in my life and the way that I used to “hear” things said to me, it is amazing to me that I ever could have interpreted those things as negative and as something to shy away from.
But I understand why — we are all taught only one side of the equation….all of the negativity.
Sooooo…..What if, what if, we tried focusing on one positive thing every single day?
Just try it…one positive thing. Let me know what you think when you are done, even how you feel.
And then try it again the next day, lol. 😉
